The Gift of Purpose – Empowering Lives Affected by Memory Loss
Restoring Purpose. Rekindling Connection. Supporting Dignity.
Welcome to the Dementia Populations “Gift of Purpose” Program

What Are Brain-Stimulating Activities for Memory Loss?
Brain-stimulating exercises are purposeful, engaging tasks designed to support cognitive function, emotional well-being, and connection for individuals living with memory loss. While these exercises cannot change the course of dementia, they can make a meaningful difference in daily life by focusing on what still remains—strengths, memories, and the ability to connect—rather than what has been lost.

These exercises may include guided reminiscing, sensory exploration, simple puzzles, drawing, or conversation-based prompts. They are not meant to test or overwhelm, but to gently invite participation, spark joy, and encourage self-expression. When offered consistently and with care, these exercises can lead to a greater sense of purpose, dignity, and overall well-being for both the person with memory loss and the caregiver supporting them.

Types of Activities
Each Gift of Purpose packet includes a variety of brain-stimulating exercises that support dignity, connection, and confidence. These activities are not tests—they’re engaging, familiar, and meaningful ways to connect.

Reminisce
A basic guided script on the chosen theme is provided, making it easy for new caregivers to lead or giving professionals a flexible starting point. This activity often leads to feelings of being useful, valued, and connected for the individual with memory loss.
By sharing their life experiences, wisdom, and knowledge, participants often experience a boost in confidence and self-esteem. They are reminded of all they have done, seen, and learned throughout their lives. The delightful, heartfelt stories that emerge during this activity make it a favorite among both participants and their caregivers.

Choices
During this brain-stimulating exercise, participants are invited to voice their preferences, opinions, and personal views on nostalgic topics. With no right or wrong answers, this non-intimidating activity encourages open sharing and expression.
Making choices prompts the brain to reason, evaluate, and decide—activating important cognitive functions while offering participants a sense of control and autonomy. Participants may gain a sense of control in their lives as they accept the invitation to voice their choices and opinions. This opportunity to express compelling thoughts and personal views can lead to meaningful conversations and increased self-confidence. Personalities often surface during this exercise, revealing humor, strong preferences, or surprising insights that deepen the connection between the participant and those around them.

Which One?
Individuals may gain a higher level of confidence as they are invited to share their judgments, preferences, and differences during this brain-stimulating exercise. The activity itself—and the interaction it sparks—activates the thinking process, ignites ideas, and rekindles memories. Participants' responses not only position them as the expert, giving them a renewed sense of purpose, but also create a win-win atmosphere for everyone involved.

Sensory
An individual’s sense of self-worth may be enhanced as they accept the invitation to help identify sensory items related to the packet’s theme. Participants’ senses are ignited as they see, touch, feel, and sometimes smell or taste items from a thoughtfully curated list provided in each packet. The confidence with which individuals with memory loss take charge during this brain-stimulating exercise of discovery often produces sweet, joyous moments—and the gift of purpose—for everyone involved.

Puzzle-Based Socialization
Individuals with memory loss may acquire a sense of being needed and feeling useful as they respond to the powerful, purpose-filled invitation to “help” with a simple, brain-stimulating puzzle project. This interactive exercise works multiple skills, including sequencing, spatial awareness, hand-eye coordination, and dexterity.

As participants engage, their joy and emotional connection often shine through. They aren't just completing a task—they're getting busy living by helping others. For more advanced care providers, optional training is available to help interpret the outcomes of this activity and apply interventions in everyday life, such as enhancing activities of daily living. This can increase the participant’s sense of success and reduce stress for the caregiver.

Drawing
Giving and receiving gifts is a meaningful part of life for everyone. This unmatched "Purpose Approach" is designed to renew the joy and fulfillment that comes from giving to others. Individuals may experience the "gift of giving" as they accept the invitation to create a drawing and offer it to someone.
This brain-stimulating exercise ignites multiple areas of the brain, engaging planning and spatial skills as participants replicate a simple, hand-drawn image. The act of drawing not only brings joy to the individual but also strengthens their sense of purpose.
For more advanced care providers, additional training is available to learn how to interpret the drawings, which may reveal potential memory-related challenges. These insights can guide simple, effective interventions in daily care, supporting both the participant’s success and the caregiver’s confidence.

Each Gift of Purpose packet offers a wide range of activities designed to honor the abilities of individuals with memory loss while supporting those who care for them. From guided reminiscing to sensory exploration, each activity encourages connection, sparks memories, and nurtures self-worth. Whether it's sharing stories, making personal choices, or helping with puzzles, participants are invited into meaningful moments that highlight their strengths and individuality. Exercises like drawing and identifying familiar items not only engage the brain but also renew a sense of purpose, belonging, and joy. By creating these moments of connection and confidence, The Gift of Purpose is exactly that—a gift for both the person living with memory loss and the caregiver walking alongside them.
